There are businesses who are in the business of making sure their shortener applications run 24x7 with real-time tracking. That's tough for many businesses to replicate. That being said, the trust factor carries some weight. The company I work for builds them in to make linking to search results more manageable, like this search for $1m+ homes in Kenwood: http://www.results.net/Search/16592 One concern I’ve had with custom URL shorteners is reliability.
